Large two-door pine armoire dated 1793, retaining its original hand-painted folk art decoration and more than two centuries of naturally aged character. The date 1793 appears at the top of each door, while the paneled doors and canted sides are decorated with hand-painted floral motifs, vases, and trailing vines.
Warm earth tones of brown, teal, red, and additional colors appear against a traditional faux wood painted background. Light green painted trim provides a contrasting accent around the architectural form. The armoire rests on traditional bun feet.
The doors open to reveal two interior shelves, each constructed in two sections to accommodate the canted sides. Old hand-carved hooks remain along the interior back, while two supports near the upper sides indicate that a hanging rod was used at an earlier point in time.
The old lock and key on the right door remain functional. The left door is secured by an old interior metal latch, which is reached from behind the vertical center separation between the doors.
More than 200 years of use are reflected in nicks, old markings, wear and distress to the original painted finish, and evidence of previous repairs. Age related separation is visible around seams, corners, and other areas throughout the armoire. Residual signs of old wormhole activity are also present but are no longer active.
Restored, stable, and ready for use. A wax finish gives the original painted surface a soft luster while preserving its beautifully aged character.
